Image Resolution Guide

When using imagery in any design for print, resolution is one of the most important factors to enable a high quality print output. Refer to our User Guide for more information.

CMYK 4-Color Mode

Our standard printing mode in digital printing is CMYK 4-Color printing system (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). Please ensure that your design file is in CMYK mode if possible. Any submitted file in RGB will be auto-converted to CMYK before print production.

Adobe Illustrator Guide

Create your document size as per the template instruction. This document size is also the Trim Size. Enter the amount of artboards to suit the product you are designing for. 1 Artboard is the same as one sided printing. 2 Artboards are double sided etc.

Here you will need to enter the documents Bleed setting. For a business card, this is 2mm Bleed. Please refer to the product guideline you are designing for, as bleed values can vary.

Select CMYK for the colour mode and Raster Effects High (300ppi).

Creating The Brochure/Book Cover

The width of the spine is a significant factor when designing the cover of your book/brochure. The width of the spine is automatically calculated after you choose the number of inner sheets, the paper type, the paper weight, and whether you choose Single or Double Sided printing.

In this example, we will create the cover for a 125-page book, with single-sided inner page printing. After we choose 125 sheets for the inner pages, you will notice the Spine size will increase. With this information, we can now start to design the cover to this spec.

The cover comprises of the front, spine, and the back. The front and back cover is the same size as the inner sheets, and the spine is 10mm (since we are printing 125 inner sheets). Therefore we create a document artwork size to include inner sheet + spine + inner sheet. Once this is setup, we then need to have a 5mm bleed around all sides. This ensures there will be no white borders after the cover is trimmed.

Document Setup For Inner Pages

When setting up your brochure/book document, please follow these settings. Set up your document in Indesign, please choose 5mm Bleed on all sides and create your design using ‘Facing Pages’. This document will be for inner pages only. Please don’t include the cover here, the cover design will be in a separate document.

Take special care to extend artwork beyond the bleed line to prevent any unwanted white borders after the inner pages are trimmed.

When your design is complete and ready to be exported to PDF, please follow the below output settings:

Compatibility: Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5) Pages: All Export As: Pages

Marks and Bleed: Use Document Bleed Settings (double check this is set to 5mm)

Scodix Guideline

Scodix is a print finish that adds a luxurious look and feel to ordinary print runs by producing a clear raised ink. It is a digital enhancement printed on top of an image after the printing and laminating process. Scodix can only be created if you make a ‘Scodix’ Layer in your artwork, using Adobe Illustrator or Indesign only. To do this; create a new layer in Illustrator or Indesign and name it ‘Scodix’. In this layer use 100% Black colour to create your artwork that requires the Scodix finish. Everything that is on this layer in black, will be printed with Scodix. Please note Scodix cannot bleed outside of the trim area. (Please leave 3mm from the edge of the Scodix application to the product trim area). Scodix cannot be applied over any score/fold areas/performations. For the best results, avoid applying Scodix to thin lines, small text or finely detailed artwork. Below this layer is your ‘Printing’ layer, here you can place all text and images that will be printed in full colour ink (not Scodix). When your design is ready to be exported to PDF, It is important to export using the below settings.

Perfect Binding

Perfect Binding
This form of bookbinding is when the pages are bound by gluing, after the back folds have been cut off, rather than by sewing. It is most commonly found in catalogues and magazines, etc.

Saddle Stitching

Saddle Stitching
This popular bookbinding method takes folded sheets and then staples through the fold line with wire staples. The staples pass through the folded crease from the outside and are clinched between the centermost pages. It can commonly be seen on brochures and catalogues.

Wire-O Binding

Wire-O Binding
Similar to the spiral bind, this uses a twin-loop system. The pages are bound with a double-spiral coil that allows the pages to be opened flat.

Thread-Sewn-Glued Binding

Thread-Sewn-Glued Binding
Similar to perfect binding, it’s used in book production requiring more durability than perfect binding. Sections are gathered in order, sewn together using thread, adhesive is then applied to the sewn spine, and the cover attached and formed around the book. Thread sewn binding is mostly used for catalogues of many pages.

Section Sewn Binding
Section sewn binding is made of printed folded sheets which are sewn together into sections. These individual sections are then also sewn together.

Scodix

Scodix
Scodix is similar to what is broadly referred to as a UV spot gloss. Scodix encompasses digital embossing and UV epoxy finishing with transparent ink. The ink thickness is 5-250 micron which produces a 3D effect.

Glossy Coating

Glossy Coating
This finish protects the surface, prevents tearing and has a shiny appearance. The coating will add an extra 20GSM onto the weight of your paper. If you choose to finsih with a double sided Glossy Coating, then 40GSM will be added to the paper’s weight.

Matte Coating

Matte Coating
This finish protects the papers surface, prevents tearing and has a non-shiny appearance. The coating will add an extra 20GSM onto the weight of your paper. If you choose to finsih with a double sided Matte Coating, then 40GSM will be added to the paper’s weight.

Please note that we are not responsible for individual circumstances which are beyond our control, but not limited to, the following:

Consumer-made mistakes such as:

Font mis-selection, typo, grammar and spelling errors
Poor/low quality and low-resolution uploaded images
Text/Image crop offs on or close to cutline
Design errors and wrong colour selections
Any errors made by you during the creation of an artwork file, mis-selection of size, quantity, product type, finishing options, paper type, cutting options and other order specifications
Wrong template selection, incorrect image orientation and positioning
Duplicate orders
Incorrect file layout for finishing such as folding, creasing, die or kiss cutting
Delivery delays due to erroneous files and damage to products after delivery to the customer

Please note that we do not proof artwork or designs created by customers before production, and it's the customer's responsibility to check the print file thoroughly before sending to print. Please preview your designs, check and correct any mistakes before placing your order and payment. Red Printing reserve the right to decide whether to issue a refund, replacement or partial refund on a case-by-case basis.

If a refund request is made and approved, through credit card, it would reflect in your next bank statement (depending on banks) or if through PayPal, you should receive the funds back to you within approx. 5-7 business days. Do note that there will be a 5% cancellation fee of the order.

Just to further inform you on colour printing, even though we ask that you edit your files in CMYK, colours are still displayed on the screen using RGB and will always look brighter and more vibrant than the final output. Because of this, the colours on the printed products may differ slightly than seen on your monitor screen. Please refer to our User Guide for more information.
